I love awards season. I love seeing all the movie stars (and TV stars). I love how fun it is to scroll through Twitter on those nights. I love all my group chats popping off (shout out Conclave Chalamet).
Last year we had a historical awards season run: Oppenheimer, Barbie, Poor Things, Killers of the Flower Moon!! It was such a good season that Normal People who only watch four movies a year actually had someone to root for!
The Golden Globes are my problematic fave. They have drastically revamped the voting body and I think that now makes for interesting nominees and winners.
They aren’t the titular problematic fave (that’s the Oscars), but the Globes have the privilege of being the biggest kick-off show to start the season and get the movie nerds excited.
This year’s telecast met me with mixed feelings. A combination of “we’re so back!!” and culminating with “it’s so over.”
No really… here’s proof that’s exactly how I felt:
Here’s my sporadic thoughts on this year’s Globes:
The Good:
Nikki Glaser was a great host. Her jokes landed and she looked amazing all night. Being funny and beautiful… not everyone can do it. We’ve come so far from the Ricky Gervais days.
Shōgun sweep for the TV drama categories, as it should.
Vin saying hi to the rock… Iconic behavior from a deeply strange man.
I’m going to say it… I think Timmy and Kylie are cute!
Zendaya engaged???? Zendaya engaged!!
Conclave screenplay win!! This was well deserved. Conclave was one of the most interesting movies about religion that I’ve watched in a long time. The sermon Ralph Fiennes gives about faith and doubt lives rent free in my mind. If we’re all imperfect beings who have fallen short of the glory of God, how can a life be a testimony? How can one be sure they’re doing the right thing? Amazing stuff.
The only score I listened to last summer won best score (Challengers).
Demi Moore winning Best Performance by Female Actor in a Musical or Comedy (geez long name) for The Substance, one of the best films of 2024.
Fernanda Torres win!!! BRASIL SIL-SIL-SIL!
The Bad:
No clips of the nominees???
As someone who lives on the superior coast of the U.S. (East Coast) the Golden Globes end too late.
Timothee Chalamet did not win for A Complete Unknown. I’m watching this tonight so I can have a legit opinion about his performance, but I feel like the voters aren’t taking him seriously enough yet. They keep calling him Timmy, they have nominated him four times with no win, they love to make jokes about him in the monologues… Here’s to hoping some of the momentum starts back up his way.
The fun fact chyrons for each presenter or winner… Some of these were genuinely funny, but most of them were just… weird? Who was responsible for submitting the fun facts for the stars? Does the celeb know what fun fact was eventually used? Michael Keaton was a prop handler on Mr. Rogers’ show. Okay.. thanks for the information I could get from IMDB. Movie stars used to be elusive and mysterious, but now I know too much.
The Ugly:
Anora winning….nothing.
Golden age of TV is joever. None of these shows (aside from Shōgun) have the juice.
Emilia Perez director reading a three-page speech, very French of him.
Every Emilia Perez win. More on this in a future newsletter.
My hottest take is that the Golden Globes have bits that go on way too long. Seth Rogan and Catherine O’Hara took forever to get to the nominees in their presenter bit and I don’t have the patience for it anymore.
Wicked won the made up/participation award of Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. A category for which Dune: Part Two wasn’t even nominated. I hated Wicked so you can take whatever I say with a grain of salt, but Jon Chu definitely practiced his speech in the mirror… He thought they had won best picture or something. Super corny speech, just accept your fake award and go.
And lastly, here are my favorite tweets of the night:
